| 12 of 17. The Japanese Military occupied Kosrae during WWII and built
the Yewak Radio Station at this site. An American Navy man from a US Submarine came ashore and blew up a fuel depot to create a diversion so he could steal the code from a book in the
Yewak Radio Station. He succeeded and made his way across the reef to the waiting submarine. This successful mission later inspired the 1959 movie Up Periscope starring James Garner. The Japanese destroyed the
Yewak Radio Station towards the end of the war so it would not fall into US hands.
