Trip to the Island of
Kosrae |
|
|
The Island of Kosrae is the eastern most island of the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM). Kosrae is circular in shape and has no outer islands. Like the Hawaiian Islands, the Island of Kosrae was born of fire (Volcanic) with an interior of steep mountain ridges that cover 70% of the island. The island is 42 square miles and surrounded by a fringe reef. The ruggedness keeps the interior isolated and heavy rainfall keeps the island covered with a tropical rain forest that is home to many rare plants and animals.
The Island of Kosrae is serviced by a Continental flight six days a week that
originates from Honolulu. English is widely spoken and the US
Dollar is the official currency.

Kosrae is known as the "Jewel of the Pacific" for its untouched fringing coral reef, pristine waters, visibility up to 200+ feet and a thriving hard coral society. The spectacular fringing reefs completely encircles the island and supports more than 172 species of hard corals and 10 species of soft corals. Living among the coral reef are over 250 species of fish and marine life. The Mooring Buoy Reef Program installed and maintains 55 Mooring Buoy's that provides easy access to SCUBA Diving boats and fisherman while protecting the reef from loose boat anchors.
We would like to thank Jeff and Ben from the
Kosrae
Village Resort for taking very good care of us above and
below the surface. |
