6 of 7. South of Mauna Kea is the active volcano Mauna Loa that rises 13,679 feet above sea level. This volcano last erupted during 1986 and scientist say magma activities is picking up that would indicate another eruption is on the way. Mauna Loa is considered the most massive active volcano on earth and is very capable of overwhelming Hilo and other areas.
